ENG 345c Revolutions in British Poetry, 1770-1815

Concentrating on the emergence of romantic poetry at the end of the eighteenth century, this course will examine the rejection of neo-classical verse traditions; nationalism and the rise of Scots dialect poetry; feminist and radical voices; and the response of British writers to the French Revolution. Readings of Burns, Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Helen Maria Williams, Charlotte Smith, William Cowper, Mary Robinson, Joanna Baillie, and Anna Letitia Barbauld.

N.B. This course satisfies either the pre- or the post-1800 requirement.
