ENG 107: Shakespeare and the Modern Imagination
Miss Berglund

Fall 1998

Office: Blaustein 321; Box 5335; 439-2197; lber@conncoll.edu
Office Hours: Mondays 2:30-4 p.m., Tuesdays 10-11 a.m. and by appointment

Required Texts: We will read William Shakespeare's Henry V, Romeo and Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew, Richard III, Othello and King Lear. I ordered the Signet editions, which contain helpful notes and critical essays, but you may use other editions if you wish.

Materials Fee: $5.00 (for library videos). The English Department must receive your payment by 4 p.m. on 16 September or you will be dropped from the course. Cash payments must be exact change and made in person at the department office, Blaustein 313; checks, payable to the English Department, may be dropped off at the office or sent through the campus mail to Mrs. Gaynor, English Department secretary.

Course Requirements: Two short written commentaries on the films (10% each), contributions to online discussion as required in the second half of the semester (10%), a 6-7 page paper (25%), a midterm exam (20%), and a final exam (25%). You must hand in all assigned work in order to pass the course. You may take an extension of up to one week on one paper. Other late papers will be marked down 1/3 of a grade; I will not accept a paper that is more than a week overdue.

You will be assigned to one of three groups (A, B or C); due dates for each group's commentaries are given below. The commentaries should be 250-500 words and should offer analysis of either or both films. These papers may be given to me in class or sent to me via email no later than 1 p.m. on the due date. Grades will be based on the thoughtfulness of your remarks, on the clarity and organization of your prose and on your adherence to rules of grammar and mechanics.

The final paper must be double-spaced, typed and stapled in the upper left-hand corner. No extra title pages, folders or covers. Failure to follow the format and citations guidelines distributed in class will negatively affect your paper grade. You may, but need not, discuss this paper with me in advance; if I receive an advance draft, I will provide you with comments within 48 hours.

Each film will be shown twice (see separate schedule), beginning on Thursday, 10 September at 7 p.m. with Olivier's Henry V. If you prefer, you may watch the movies at other times; videos may be checked out from Shain reserve desk, and many of the films are available at video outlets. Tapes that excerpt some important scenes also are on reserve.
